Apokoronas

The district of Apokoronas in the north-eastern corner of the Chania prefecture and at the foot of the White Mountains is one of the greenest regions of Crete and contains some interesting sights, such as Lake Kournas, the island’s only freshwater lake, picturesque villages and small beach resorts. 

Georgioupolis

Georgioupolis is a small seaside town in Chania Prefecture, approximately 38 km southeast of Chania, in West Crete.

 Is set in a green countryside with a large beach stretching about 1.5 km eastwards.

  The area around Georgioupolis is Apokoronas, with its picturesque villages and verdant landscape. 

 

kourna Lake

Kournas Lake is the only freshwater lake in Crete., was known as Lake Koressia in antiquity but later took its current name from the Arabic word for lake.

The lake is in a beautiful landscape, lying in a valley among the hills, about 4 km from Georgioupolis in Chania Prefecture (west Crete).Kournas Lake is the ideal place for an afternoon walk or a daytrip nearby.

The landscape is lovely and relaxing, whether you want to go for a walk in the countryside, swim or ride a pedalo on the lake 

 

Rethymnon

Rethymnon is a little smaller than Chania but is also growing quickly into a sprawling, rather ugly urban centre. However its old town and narrow alleys along the water front compete with Chania for the title of “Most beautiful city of Crete”.

There are more Turkish houses and minarets remaining here than in Chania, although most houses are of Venetian origin. Rethymnon also has a long sandy beach which starts practically in the centre of the town and stretches eastward. Needless to say, this beach is lined with hotels, restaurants, cafes and all the other accompanying touristic “symptoms”.

 

Samaria Gorge

The gorge of Samaria is situated in the National park of Samaria, in the White Mountains in West Crete. 

This majestuous gorge is considered one of the great attractions of Crete and many tourists want to visit it. 

But you must realise that it is a long (5 to 7 hours) walk on rough terrain so you will need to have a certain degree of fitness and walking experience in order to enjoy it. 

 

Imbros

Imbros Gorge is located in the province Sfakia and is the third most visited gorge in Crete, following Samaria Gorge and Agia Irini by Sougia, all belonging to the E4 European hiking path. The scenery is beautiful and the low difficulty makes the descent of Imbros ideal for families with children. The length of the gorge is 11 km and the course lasts 2-3 hours.

Maleme is one of the most historic places in Greece, and especially the military airport of the Allies, as the Battle of Crete during WWII. The Germans wanted to occupy the aerodrome and thus open the way for lifting reinforcements for occupying Crete. In order to occupy the airstrip, German paratroopers landed in Maleme in May 1941. The Germans, who met heroic resistance from the locals and the allied forces, finally occupied the airport after suffering very important casualties.

Aradena Gorge

The bridge of Aradena (Bungy Jumping)

Aradaina Bridge is 138 meters high and is located in the prefecture of Chania, municipality of Sfakia, Crete Island. It is the highest bridge for bungy jumping in Greece and the second highest in Europe. In 1999 Liquid Bungy operated for the first time on Aradaina Bridge when they set the Balkan record for highest jump. Since 2000 we have organized public events on a regular basis.

The +Monastery of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity), or Tzagarolon Monastery

as it is also known, is one of the most impressive monasteries you will see in Crete.

The Monastery of Agia Triada is located on the Akrotiri Peninsula, in the north of Chania Prefecture. It is 15 kilometres from Chania, very close to Chania Airport and the equally – famous Monastery of Gouverneto.

Agia lake

The artificial Lake Agia is located near the homonymous village, just 9 km from the city of Chania. It is a small lake of 450 acres, which is connected to the south with the valley of Fassa. This valley is considered as the most damp one on Crete.

Lake Agia hosts a large variety of species of flora and fauna of Crete. It is also the refuge for many migratory birds.

Gouverneto

Gouverneto +Monastery (Moni Gouvernetou)

is one of the oldest monasteries in Crete, as it was built in 1537.

Gouverneto Monastery, or Our Lady of the Angels as it is also known, is on the Akrotiri Peninsula, about 4 km from Agia Triada Monastery, or 19 km north of Chania.
